Tenant Engagement Toolkits

Engage your tenants on issues related to sustainability with our livegreen energy and waste toolkits.

Waste diversion and energy conservation are two important aspects of BC Housing’s sustainability initiatives.

In 2011, we sponsored a pilot study of four social housing provider sites. The study helped us develop strategies and resources for non-profit providers to engage tenants on sustainability. These strategies support behaviour change about energy conservation.

    Energy conservation resources

These resources are for social housing providers or community developers who are interested in engaging tenants on sustainability issues, like reducing energy consumption in areas such as heat, water, electricity and air conditioning:

    • Tenant Engagement on Sustainability Guide  – Outlines practical steps you can use to develop and implement a tenant engagement program to reduce energy use and utility costs
    • Facilitators Handbook  – A practical resource for engaging directly with tenants
    • Supplementary Guide – Helps you engage diverse populations, such as seniors, people with mental and physical disabilities as well as youth and families, on issues of sustainability

    Waste diversion resources

These resources provide practical ideas and activities to support behavioural changes that improve waste reduction and diversion. Our toolkit consists of the following components:

    • Guide for Social Housing Providers  – Includes practical steps for planning and implementing an effective tenant engagement initiative that will result in improved waste reduction and diversion.
    • Facilitators Handbook for Social Housing Providers  – Designed for facilitators who will be directly implementing the sustainability initiatives with tenants of social housing. The handbook includes social marketing materials, educational resources and a step-by-step guide for planning interactive activity modules and tenant engagement activities.
